What is Coaching?
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching
Most often, a performance coaching program takes place over a series of 6 – 10 sessions, although sometimes one session may be enough to prepare you for a specific event, speech, or interview
I will explain what you can expect from our work together and how it will proceed. Then we will explore what your coaching topic is and why that is important to you.
Each session is an hour long, and depending upon what we agree between us, can take place weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly – or even irregularly. Sessions can be held via video conference or phone, or in person.
In a typical session you will come prepared with a topic, a ‘piece’ of your overall one, for us to focus on. I will ask questions and listen a lot: you will do most of the talking.
I follow a structure in each session, which you may or may not become aware of – it doesn’t really matter.
This will include ‘competency practices’, which may involve your making small adjustments to one or two daily habits and behaviours, and ‘core practices’. This may involve your undertaking some research or trying something new. Typically, the core practices would require no more than a couple of hours in a week.
The expectation is that you will explore your action plan and practices between sessions. In the next coaching session you may, or may not, wish to report on how those are going: but it’s not like ‘homework’. I won’t have any expectation or disappointment about whether or not you try any of these intentions out.
Sometimes we might agree to renew or adjust the core topic. Sometimes we may decide to adjust the frequency of our sessions or add some on, or perhaps you may choose to pivot to another topic altogether.
Everything is up to you…

Friends can be a wonderful source of wisdom and support. At the same time, only you know truly what is best for you, and a coach will respect this fact.
